This week’s challenge is still happening over on the @illustratedfaith message boards! I feel like I have a lot of things to say, so stick with me friends.

I was reading through chapter four of Esther and really letting myself feel the anguish that Mordecai and the Jews express here. They know now that The destruction of their people is a very real possibility. Esther hears of Mordecai’s mourning, that he has asked her to go before the king and plea with him to save her people. She reminds Mordecai that going before the king without being summoned by him could result in her death, unless the king were to hold out the golden scepter.

Here is everyone’s favorite part, the powerful and beloved saying that we all cling to. Mordecai replies to Esther, “and who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Meaning, “Esther, my child, this is your purpose. This is why God has given you favor. He has a mission for you.”

Maybe you are like me and have overlooked what Mordecai tells Esther before this verse though. I can’t tell you guys how many times I have read Esther’s story and managed to miss this gem. Today while I was reading and asking God to show me something, my eyes finally saw this, “do not think to yourself that in the Kings palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise up for the Jews from another place, but you and your fathers house will perish.”

Wow. Just wow. I love Mordecai’s reminder that keeping silent and staying hidden away does not equal safety. Speaking up, approaching the king, embracing our purpose is our calling. Is easy to play it safe, to speculate the “what ifs.” But ultimately, God’s calling for you and me is to be as bold as Esther as she prepared to stand before the king. Un Summoned and un sure of her fate and her people’s fate.

    • Gorgeous art and rich thoughts on Esther. She is such an inspiration.
