mixed media Bible journaling tutorial by Heather Greenwood | scraping paint in curved shapes to create flowers

Hi friends, I don’t know about you but I’m having fun coming up with more ways to scrape paint into the margins of our Bibles! This one might be my new favorite, because painting flowers is one of my favorite things to do!

This past few weeks has been busy and also HARD!!! I was sick while we were on vacation even though we had an amazing time at the Ark Encounter in which I got to meet up with Jillian and her family! I love how God brought us together and we got to meet in person. One of the hardest things for me is the fact that our creative team is all over the continent and I can only give virtual hugs, so it was such a blessing to hang out with them and get to know them better. The next day we went to the Creation Museum. It’s so cool to see everything we learn in our homeschool come to life. My kids loved the dinosaurs probably the best and I love just watching them soak and see how what they’ve been reading in their books happened.

Last week was tough because it was the start of our homeschool year after being on an extended break, we also had a lot of hard stuff happen last week and it was also the two year anniversary of when my mom called to tell me she had cancer. This whole grieving time has surprised me, the ebb and flows that happen. The anniversary affected me so much that I was crying during worship on Sunday. They weren’t really tears of sorrow, but tears of awe. You know when the lyrics touch you so much that you can’t help but get emotional… that’s what happened. Just thinking of how amazing Jesus is and His love for me.

We’ve been studying 1 John in our church and the whole message was about the word being assured of our salvation. Pastor Rob said the word, “KNOW” a ton and all I could think was… “HEY, that’s my word for the year!!!” My word was to know God more this year and I loved that he reminded us that truly know God is not just to know Him in our heart, but to know Him in our head too… it’s an intimate relationship, objectively and subjectively.

He also asked the question… “When was the last time the thought of the gospel made you weep?” UMMM… like ten minutes ago when we were singing and I was trying to hold back the tears so that I could sing the words out loud and not croak!!!

I just knew I had to add my word of the year here in my Bible to remind myself to know God with both my head and my heart… so how perfect is the silhouette stamp in the new devotional kit for “head”?!?

I didn’t have any idea what to do for the background, but since I love flowers I thought it would be cool to try creating flowers using paint and a paint card… no brushes! I love the unpredictability of what you get with scraping paint and that for sure happened here.

STEP ONE:

gather supplies: acrylic paints and a paint card… you’ll also want a Bible mat to protect the other pages

STEP TWO:

add dabs of paint to the edge of your paint card… The fun comes with adding a few similar colors together for an abstract look

STEP THREE:

start scraping in a circular motion in different spot around your Bible… have fun with this making several layers of scrapes to form your blooms

STEP THREE B (optional):

add a dab of paint to the center of your bloom

STEP FOUR:

repeat step TWO with the colors you want for your leaves

STEP FIVE:

starting at the bloom’s edge, scrape in a curved motion one direction and then the other direction next to it to form a leaf… make several leaves around each of the blooms.

using a marker, define your blooms and leaves

To finish up, I stamped the silhouette onto some white cardstock and cut it out. I then used alphabet stickers and one of the paper pieces in the kit to finish my title. I also took my black marker and added some more dots around the page, stamped the date and finished with some journaling. I also took my pink marker to highlight the word “know” several times as well as the main verse I wanted to focus on. Oh, I also added a tabby and some wordfetti stickers to find my page.
