He Has Done Great Things | 1 Samuel 12:24 | Illustrated Faith Make It Count Devotional | Leah Van Ert

There’s something about getting a new Illustrated Faith devotional in the mail that just makes my heart sing. Before I even crack open the pages, I know that they’re going to be filled with truth, encouragement, and some correction.

I was especially excited for the Make it Count devotional kit because my word of the year is “intentional.” How perfect is that connection? As I’m learning to be more intentional, my walk with Christ has been my biggest focus and I knew that this devotional would be a great way to kick-start my journey of becoming more intentional.

Day one focuses on 1 Samuel 12:24 which says, “But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.”

When I began to meditate on this verse, the first thing that came to my mind was that it’s actually easier for me to count my blessings (the “great things he has done”) when life starts to get rocky. Seems like an oxymoron, right? I’ve trained myself to count the fruit through negativity so well that I’ve all but forgotten to remember God’s blessings when life is great.

I’m so thankful that I can find the good amongst the not-so-good, but I definitely need to be more intentional about counting my blessings all the time instead of just some of the time. That’s when I was hit over the head with this line:

“When our skies are sunny and the sailing is smooth, we may have a tendency to forget that all those good things are gifts from Him and that we need to praise Him for all we have.”

Oof. Mind reading, much? (side note: how cool is it that God tells us exactly what we need to hear, when we need to hear it?) Here’s what I’m learning, friends: focus on the good things that God gives you no matter what your season looks like (good, bad, or ugly).
