Never are we more wide-eyed in wonder than in the Christmas season. There are twinkly lights lining houses, Santa’s chuckling while holding small children at the mall, flashy displays in shop windows, blinding commercials for this gadget and that, and so much more.

And it starts in July. Marketing gurus know to get us “in the spirit” early, preparing us for all the shopping, baking, and gift-giving that come with the season. It can be easy to get caught up in it all and to miss what it’s really all about.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmastime. I love the lights, the music, the joy that abounds. But I can easily find myself on the other side of December 25th feeling empty and like it was all for naught.

This Christmas my challenge to you is to look for Jesus in everything. Let’s “get in the spirit” by asking the Holy Spirit to tune our hearts to hear His whisper and to set our eyes on Him.

See those twinkly lights? Praise Him for being the light of the world.
Catch that Christmas musical or concert? Praise Him for adding music to our days.
Receive a thoughtful gift from a friend? Praise Him for sending the ultimate gift.

It’s that simple, and the list could go on and on.

“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift,” says 2 Corinthians 9:15. He’s better than all the bright bits and baubles combined, and let us indeed thank Him this Christmas!
