1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice Always, Pray Continuously, Give Thanks In All Circumstances... pocket card Bible Journaling by Bailey

 What do you do when it feels like there is nothing you can do?

The world has seen its share of hurt lately, and my heart has been heavy. At times I feel incapable of taking action, that my words are empty, and as though all hope is lost. When thoughts like this hit, there’s only one place to turn: scripture.

 What do you do when it feels like there is nothing you can do?

That is the question my heart is asking, and 1 Thessalonians 5 provided the answer.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says:

“Rejoice always, pray continually,
give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Rejoice always. Goodness gracious, that feels hard these days. How do I rejoice in the midst of heartbreak and suffering? How do I rejoice when transition seems never ending and I can barely find my footing?  More and more questions that my human mind cannot answer. So back to scripture I go. In the Psalms, David cries out to God, raw with emotion and brutally honest. He questions, he queries, and he admits his doubts. But the thing is, He doesn’t answer why. He answers WHO.

How do I rejoice in the midst of heartbreak and suffering? I rejoice because I know who God is and what He is capable of.

How do I rejoice when transition seems never ending and I can barely find my footing? I rejoice because I remember how God has been faithful and I choose to believe He will be faithful still.

Pray continually. When rejoicing is hard, pray. When rejoicing is easy, pray. Praise His name, plead your cause, confess your sins, thank Him for His presence and power. He delights in hearing from His children.

How do I rejoice or PRAY in the midst of heartbreak and suffering? I rejoice because I know who God is and what He is capable of. I pray because I depend on Him for joy and security.

How do I rejoice or PRAY when transition seems never ending and I can barely find my footing? I rejoice because I remember how God has been faithful and I choose to believe He will be faithful still. I pray because drawing near to Him is the ultimate direction I need to walk.

Give thanks in all circumstances. It is the same here, again and again. I can give thanks, because I know who He is, what He’s capable of, and because I depend on Him. I can give thanks because I remember how He has been faithful and I believe He will be faithful again.

These are the things He asks us to do. These are “his will for [us] in Christ Jesus” (v 18). These are what we can do when it feels like there’s nothing we can do.

Rejoice. Pray. Give thanks. In ALL circumstances.

    Love this! It’s so easy to let the things in life get us down, and while we search for ways to make things better, we forget that all we need to do is pray. Thanks for sharing this! And that little pocket is adorable! I’m on a mission to find some now!

    I was hoping that it would show how to make this prayer pocket unless i missed something. I appreciate the message being taught. Amen, but can you also show how to do this?
