Be still my list lovin’ heart! The latest Illustrated Faith “Lists by Faith” kit is all kinds of swoon worthy, and I knew I’d be head over heels before even cracking it open. When I finally flipped through the booklet, I jumped right to the second prompt, eager to list my favorite ladies.
In the Bible, we meet women of all ages and life stages, ordinary women chosen by the Lord to be part of his Kingdom work. When we think of Mary and Ruth and Esther it’s easy to forget that they were ordinary women that simply said yes to an extraordinary God.
The New Testament is quick to set the stage for what and Who is to come, and in Matthew we are given the genealogy of Christ. The names of five women you may recognize are listed among the men: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, the wife of Uriah (Bathsheba), and Mary.
Tamar: the unwanted, impatient widow.
Rahab: the faith-filled harlot.
Ruth: the loyal foreigner.
Bathsheba: the adulteress.
Mary: the ordinary young girl.
Their circumstances and sins labeled them, but the Lord chose them to use them even so. He redeemed their failures and false identities, weaving them into the family line that would bring about the birth of Jesus! What a wild notion!
May these forgiven, determined, beautiful, and ordinary women be a reminder to us that, no matter where we come from or what we’ve done in the past, God is bigger than who we believe ourselves to be and the mistakes we have made. He is an extraordinary God who can and will use you. All we need to do is say YES.
