It can be really hard in today’s world to be different.  Being really different, the kind of different in Romans 12:2, is something we can’t do on our own.  “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Sure we can try to stand out by the way we look, what color we have our hair, what we wear, or with piercings and tattoos.  But ultimately, somebody somewhere will probably have the same color hair, wear the same thing and have the same tattoos and piercings.  Our true differences happen, through our relationship with Jesus.

God calls us to be transformed, to find the will of God.  And in finding and following His will, we will be different…transformed.  Those around us, should be able to look at our lives and see something different from the world.  Something that we, as Christians, have inside us that the world can’t offer.

Romans1

Once we are saved, God is continually transforming us.  As we grow in our relationship with Him, our wants line up with His wants for our lives.  I like seeing the stark difference in the definitions of the words conform and transform.

Conform:  “comply with rules, standards, or laws”

Transform:  “make a thorough or dramatic change in the form, appearance, or character of”

So when you really focus on what each word means, I think it becomes clear which one falls in line with the idea of transforming ourselves to the will of God, and being truly different.
