Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:4
I remember hearing a long time ago that the “give” in this verse doesn’t mean that God will give me whatever I want when I delight myself in Him, but that God would place the desires on my heart so that He could fulfill them. Day 3 in the Through Christ devotional is about just that!
Meg writes about how our God is not a magic genie, we can’t just get whatever we want, whenever we want. God calls us to draw near to Him and to find our truest delight in Him. When we draw near to Him to spend time praying and reading His word, we get to know the heart of our Creator more and we fall more in love with what a good Father He is to us. Our hearts take delight in Him!
The more our hearts delight in Him, the more aligned our hearts are with His own heart and desires. Think about your best friend or husband, are there things they love that have captured your heart because they love them? When my husband and I first started dating, he kept talking on and on about rock climbing until he finally convinced me to try it. That first climb, I was terrified! But you know what? Through the months of dating and rock climbing together, I genuinely fell in love with rock climbing too! When we got married, we even registered at REI and got all of our own outdoor rock climbing gear! The more I got to know my husband while we were dating, the more the things that he loved were impressed upon my heart, and the more I fell in love with them too.
The same is true of our walk with the Lord. The closer we draw to Him, the more we read about the things that hold His heart, the more we long for those same things. And the best part of that is, He’s the one that can and will fulfill those desires! God will give us the desires and He will fulfill them, too, when we find our truest delight in Him. I love the way Meg ends of the day’s devotional. She says, “God says that when we delight in Him, seek His ways, and find out pleasure in Him, then our hearts are aligned with His. And then HE is the desire of our heart!”
I loved Heather’s tutorial about covering up her journaling with paint and art! Often times I don’t share images from the monthly devotionals because they end up with more heart felt writing than pretty pictures. I wanted to try covering up my prayers and I actually loved how it turned out. Thanks for the fun tip, Heather!
