Tiffany Zajas | Galaxy Technique Tutorial
Hello, Tiffany here! Today I’m sharing with you how to create a galaxy effect in your bible. I had so much fun with this, and I hope you do too!
I started by sketching out the lettering that I wanted on the page, so I could be sure to get the spacing right.
Next, I used a paint brush and some white gesso to paint over the sketched lettering. I’m sure you could get a similar effect using any white acrylic paint.
After that has dried, take your watercolors and some water and paint your first layers of color. First, I used red. The key is to paint it down in an irregular way. You don’t want this to look perfect! I used a little more water than I normally would so that I could swirl the paint on the page more, which helps in creating that galaxy look. Be sure to put something down underneath your page for protection, because your page will get really wet! (I use the Illustrated Faith You Rule Bible Mat, and I LOVE it!) Don’t be afraid to paint over your lettering with the watercolors.
Time to add another layer of color! Next up: Purple.
Blue.
And lastly, black. You would think that with this being a starry galaxy I would use a lot more black…but I wanted to keep it to a minimum, letting the other colors be more vibrant.
Once I let that dry, the lettering ended up being fainter that I had wanted. So, I grabbed my white gel pen and outlined all of the letters.
Then I added a bunch of little white dots to be the stars!
And then you’re done! I was really happy with how this turned out. There are a lot of different possibilities for this! If you want some inspiration, just do a Google image search for “galaxy” and you will find many beautiful images to spark your imagination.
Hope you enjoy making a galaxy page as much as I did! Share your page on Instagram using the #illustratedfaith hashtag so we can all see your creativity. :) Have fun!
