bible journaling entry by Bailey Jean Roberts | wait for the Lord, you are loved right now Isaiah 40:31

You know when you say a word over and over again it starts to sound, well, not like a word at all? When I was a kid I used to let the word “Mississippi” roll over my tongue dozens of times until the entire family was in a fit of giggles about how un-word-like the name of the state sounded.

I think the same can be said of scripture if we don’t truly take it to heart. My elementary school had a school verse that we repeated every day during the pledges. Our mascot was the eagle, so naturally the verse was Isaiah 40:31.

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Back then, I didn’t get it. “Wait upon the Lord”? Like.. how servers wait tables? Are we waiting for him to show up? Didn’t Jesus already do that? Clearly, the point was lost on ten-year-old me, but fifteen years later this verse has taken on a beautiful new meaning in my life.

All of us are in a season of waiting. We may think we have reached whatever that thing was we were wishing away the days for (a job, graduation, a husband, a child) but there is still waiting involved. Others may still be in the thick of it and think that longed-for day may never come. Ultimately we are all waiting to join God in our true home, our future home, and to see Jesus come back one day.

The good news? We don’t have to wait to be loved.

We don’t have to wait to be heard.

We don’t have to wait to step into His presence.

He is here. He is near. He is already with us.

The Amplified Version of Isaiah 40:31 says this:

But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired.

Whatever you are waiting for, it is worth waiting for, and the wait can be filled with His goodness. Expect it, look for it, and lean into Him.
