The story of Rachel and Leah has always intrigued me. Having younger sister myself, the sister dynamic in stories always catches my eye and takes hold of me. While my sister and I may have fought over sharing a bathroom, I cannot imagine having the kind of conflict that these two Biblical beauties must have faced.

First, Rachel meets the love of her life, Jacob, and he works 7 years in order to marry her. But instead of getting to marry him, her father has her sister, Leah, marry him in deceit. Can you imagine that conversation between father and daughter when he told Rachel that, one, she would not be getting married, two, that her sister would go in her place, and three, that Jacob would have to work another 7 years to make her his wife. Come ON.

Fourteen years between meeting the man of her dreams and walking down the aisle with him. It was enough to make a woman go mad, if you ask me.

But God.

We don’t get to know all the details, the ins and outs or day-to-day happenings of those fourteen years, but we do know that God was at work in the midst of it all. Jacob, determined to make her his wife, worked away the days until they were wed. To him the wait and the work were worth the wait.

If I’m being honest, I don’t always see my circumstances that way. Heaven forbid I have to wait a week or a month for something. If I was staring down the barrel of fourteen years I’m pretty sure I’d bail.

But God.

That phrase again. He waits for us. He is at work for us. No matter our circumstances, He sees the big picture and calls us near, determined to do what it takes and to spend the time it will take to make us His bride.

Whatever you are waiting on, if it is His will, it will be worth the wait. Whatever you are working toward, if it is His will, it will be worth the work. Let’s press in in prayer and lean into His constant comfort. One day, we will more of the picture He sees, and I am absolutely positive it will be a masterpiece unlike anything we could have imagined.
